Royce Stevenson

Born and raised in Wichita, Royce Stevenson has been an on-air personality on Wichita's Power 93.5 for the past 11 years. He was also interested in photography and picked up his first camera at a young age. From the changing landscape of the city to Wichita's hip-hop subculture, he has attempted to capture Wichita over the past five years. Using and processing his own 35mm film, Royce documents people, places and things he comes in contact with on a daily basis.

Carnival Season, In Remembrance

Taken in 2014 at Arkalalah in Arkansas City, Kansas. Arkalahlah is usually around the end of October near Halloween, and is one of, if not the last stop on the carnival circuit for the season. This was a long exposure shot that lasted about half a second of the carousel.

The 2014 Neewollah festival in Independence, Kansas (Neewollah is “Halloween” spelled backwards). A young man with a “free hugs” sign on his back delivers his “service” to a group of clowns handing out free balloons. A traveling carnival in Winfield at the Cowley County Fair in August of 2015. While sitting on a bench, I was surprised to see a teenager wearing a double-breasted black suit in the heat. Such style deserved a photo. The Brick Street Festival in Augusta in 2016. A couple watches their grandkids enjoy the carousel.

Hip-Hop Wichita

Freddy High & XV perform a song together at the XV album release party at the Wave live music venue in downtown Wichita. Antimosity rocking the stage at Barleycorn’s in downtown Wichita, getting the crowd hyped before hip-hop legend Keith Murray hits the stage. This was a very underground show, but all the usual hip-hop heads from around Wichita were there. DJ Carbon looking for the right track. He threw an event called “Vintage Vinyl” at Abode in Wichita.
