#8 – American Pie

Everyone knows that pie is an integral part of Thanksgiving. Except for me. I hate pie. But for the rest of you, pop in your old DVD copy of American Pie and enjoy the holiday. But don’t enjoy it as much as that guy in American Pie…at least not until everybody else has had a piece. It’s available for rent on multiple streaming services, including YouTube. Happy Fakesgiving!

#7 – The Ice Storm

Okay, this one is Thanksgiving-related. Set in 1973, it’s your typical family-friendly holiday film: there’s a “key party” where married couples swap partners, alcohol and drug abuse, and electrocution. Maybe I’m underselling it. It’s actually a well-done film with a star-studded cast (Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes, and Sigourney Weaver). Thanks to director Ang Lee, the film does justice to Rick Moody’s novel of the same name. Rent it on Amazon Prime. Happy Thanksgiving!

#6 – Stuffed

Can you imagine Thanksgiving without stuffing? I sure can’t. And neither can taxidermists. This documentary about the world of taxidermy is sure to fill you up with joy and wonder. Rent it on Amazon Prime. Happy Fakesgiving!

#5 – For Your Consideration

One of Christopher Guest’s lesser-known films, this comedy satirizes Hollywood and actors: easy targets for sure. Fans of Schitt’s Creek will enjoy Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara as they portray actors in a drama called Home for Purim. But Hollywood executives decide it is “too Jewish” and change the title to Home for Thanksgiving. Much of the plot is driven by a rumor that three of the cast members will receive Oscar nominations. You will enjoy this send-up of Hollywood culture, and if you don’t, just eat more turkey. Available now on HBO Max. Happy Thanksgiving!

#4 – Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Huh? What could this possibly have to do with Thanksgiving??? Oh…

Available to watch on Hulu. Happy Fakesgiving!

#3 – Scent of a Woman

Sure, everyone likes the scent of turkey and pie on Thanksgiving, but what about the scent of a woman? Al Pacino delighted audiences in this film that takes place on Thanksgiving weekend. You probably haven’t seen it years, so give it a shot. Hoo-ah! Available to rent from Amazon Prime. Happy Thanksgiving!

#2 – Midnight Express

Ever since the writers of Airplane had Peter Graves ask, “Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?” we’ve all wondered what a Thanksgiving celebration would be like in Instanbul…said no one ever. But hey, you can’t have Thanksgiving without Turkey. Available on Hulu. Happy Fakesgiving!

#1 – Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Alright, now we can get to the REAL reason for this list, the best Thanksgiving movie of all time: Steve Martin and John Candy’s trek across the country to return home in time for Thanksgiving. With cameos from a bevy of your favorite ‘80s actors (Ben Stein, Kevin Bacon, Edie McClurg, Lyman Ward, and Michael McKean) this film is both hilarious and, at times, bittersweet. That’s exactly what you expect from the greatest filmmaker of the decade: John Hughes. Now stop reading this and go watch it for free on AMC or rent it online!
